Jaw Pain (TMJ) & Chiropractic Care

Jaw pain is very common and is also known as Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) dysfunction. The TMJ is where the skull attaches to the jaw. It is surrounded by 68 pairs of muscles and allows you to chew, yawn, speak, swallow and is in constant use.

TMJ or jaw pain can be caused by direct injury to the joint from trauma, improper alignment of jaw, overuse due to excessive chewing or orthodontics and excessive clenching. Wisdom teeth removal is one of the most common causes of TMJ dysfunction that we see regularly in practice. Pain is common and can refer to face, neck and shoulders. It can also present with difficulty chewing, decreased motion, locking, popping, clicking, headaches, dizziness and ear aches.

Chiropractic care aims to restore joint function and symmetry via specific muscle releases, mobilizations stretching and is combined with jaw exercises at home.
