Jaw Pain (TMJ) & Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care for jaw pain is administered through a series of specific muscle releases, mobilizations and stretching combined with at home jaw exercises. Chiropractic treatment for TMJ aims to reduce pain, restore joint function and symmetry.

Before treatment begins your chiropractor will perform a thorough functional, neurological and orthopedic assessment to pinpoint the cause of the pain or dysfunction. You may also be referred for x-rays, MRI or CT scans if necessary. Your chiropractor will use this information to identify the underlying cause and determine whether or not chiropractic is right for you.

What is TMJ?

Jaw pain is very common and is also known as Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) dysfunction. The TMJ is located on each side of the head where the skull attaches to the jaw. It is surrounded by 68 pairs of muscles and allows you to chew, yawn, speak, swallow and is in constant use.

A TMJ disorder refers to a group of conditions that cause pain and dysfunction in the TMJ and surrounding muscles that control the movement of the jaw.

What Causes Jaw Pain (TMJ)?
