Recovering From A Sports Injury – Chiropractic Care

Whether you’re a professional athlete or playing for your local club, it’s very common for athletes young and old, and of every skill level, to suffer from sports related injuries. This is to be expected as the physical demand of most sports can cause strains, sprains, tears or worse.

Although not all sports injuries are avoidable, there are a number of ways to reduce the risk of a sports injury. Additionally, if you are recovering from a sports injury there are a number of things that you can do to assist your body throughout the healing process.

Types Of Sports Injuries

Most sports injury will fall into one of two categories:

1) Acute Sports Injuries

An acute injury is usually caused by a traumatic event or impact, such as a tackle or fall. An acute injury will generally occur suddenly (eg. a sprained ankle or a broken arm) and tends to be difficult to prevent.

2) Repetitive or Overuse Sports Injuries

Repetitive or overuse injuries are the more common of the two types of sports injuries. Overuse injuries usually develop over time and grow in severity. In most cases, overuse sports injuries are caused by repeated activities where poor form is used, or taking on too much physical activity in a short period of time.

How To Prevent Sports Injuries

Overuse injuries are far more likely to occur when your muscles are already under stress due to poor posture, poor form and other bad habits such as forgetting to warm your muscles up before a workout or cool them down after one.

One way to help prevent sports related injuries is to visit your chiropractor for a postural assessment. Your chiropractor will be able to identify any weaknesses in your posture that could be putting you at a greater risk of injury.

Another thing that you can do to reduce the risk of injury when training is to ensure that you are using the correct equipment, and that you have a clear understanding of the correct technique when using that equipment.

It is also important to ensure that you don’t take on too much, too quickly by slowly increasing your training as your strength and skill develops.
