Chiropractic Care For Whiplash

Chiropractic Care For Whiplash

Whiplash & Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care for whiplash begins by determining the severity of damage to the neck structure via a thorough history and physical examination. In some cases, medical imaging such as x-ray, CT or MRI may also be required. Once the diagnosis is complete your chiropractor will determine whether or not chiropractic care is right for you.

Treatment for whiplash through chiropractic care is aimed at first reducing pain and inflammation, then stabilizing the neck, followed by restoration of function. This is achieved through a series of chiropractic adjustments and mobilizations combined with at-home exercises, stretches, and lifestyle modifications.

What Is Whiplash?

Whiplash is a particular type of injury caused when your neck is rapidly and unexpectedly moved beyond its normal motion one way, then in the opposite direction. This is most commonly in the forward and backward direction.

Although typically thought of as a mild condition, whiplash can be the cause of chronic pain and discomfort if left unaddressed.

What Causes Whiplash?

Whiplash occurs when the muscles and ligaments of the neck are extended beyond their typical range of motion. For example, a whiplash incident occurs in a rear end collision when your neck extends backward while the car is thrown forwards. Then once it is impacted the head is forced to flex forward beyond its normal motion. This movement causes muscles, ligaments, nerves, discs, and the spinal cord to be stretched, torn and irritated.

Other common causes of whiplash include:

  • Knocks to the head
  • Falls
  • Horseback Riding
  • Physical Abuse
  • Sports Injuries
  • Amusement Park Rides

What Are The Symptoms?

In many cases, you may not experience any noticeable symptoms of whiplash for up to 24 hours after the incident occurs. This is due to the fact that whiplash symptoms will generally develop and worsen over a period of a few days. However, without proper treatment, the pain and discomfort caused by whiplash can last for several weeks.

Symptoms of whiplash may vary in severity and can come and go. You may experience only one symptom or multiple symptoms at once. Common symptoms of whiplash include:

  • Pain in Neck
  • Decreased Neck Movement
  • Neck Stiffness or Tightness
  • Referral of pain into shoulders and arms
  • Tingling or numbness in arms and fingers
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Blurred Vision
